Area 36
Governor- David Mysliwy
I am a long time employee of Telstra having been a part of this company since 1986. Prior to this I attended the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (DDIAE). I can clearly remember my interview for Telstra having sat with the interview panel from some 90 minutes promoting my virtues and what I could bring to the company, my skills and leadership, circling around the answers for some time. What I would have achieved during the interview with toastmasters skills back then. I have a telecommunications engineering back ground and I revel in technology though I have managed to avoid ‘social media’ forums. In regards to employment, I have held a number of leadership roles in Telstra over the years managing a variety of team members and covering numerous technologies from switched network services to customers on radio networks and satellite.
In 2004 I met a fellow Telstra worker in the building lift who used the opportunity (30 seconds) to let me know she was a member of Toastmasters and invited me to the next meeting. I attended the meeting and found something I didn’t know I was missing, a place where I could feel comfortable about speaking. It was that simple. Over the next few meeting I became comfortable and decided to join, and I still remember my first table topic; “Buttons or Zippers, your choice?” It took the next 12 months to complete my CC, along the way discovering many useful speaking tips including the power of the ‘pause’.
The club members were all friendly and encouraging and I found the desire to learn and participate overwhelming. Today I don’t think I could do without the regular meetings.
This year I have taken on the challenge of Area Governor for Area 36, and look forward to the challenge, and meeting the many club members across the area.
